Alec Baldwin to Charlie Sheen: 'You Can't Win'

In a new editorial on the Huffington Post, Baldwin tells the former Two and a Half Men star and newly minted Internet sensation that the only way to save his career is to apologize to the powers that be.

 

"You can't win," he warns Sheen. "Really. You can't."

 

He explains that studios always value a hit show more than its star, and quips that in Sheen's case, his reputation as "a drug-addled, porn star-squiring, near-Joycean Internet ranter" doesn't do him any favors.

 

However, Baldwin does offer Sheen some advice, which he says he learned the hard way after Paramount booted him from the Hunt For Red October franchise in 1991.

 

"Take a nap," he suggests. "Get a shower. Call Chuck. Go on Letterman and make an apology. Write a huge check to the B'Nai Brith. And then beg for your job back. Your fans demand it."

 

Sheen had previously lashed out against Men co-creator Chuck Lorre in several public rants that preceded Warner Bros.' firing him from the comedy.

 

Although Baldwin concedes that Sheen's $100 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. "may have real grounds," he says pursuing it is not worth the damage it will do in the long run. 

 

He likens Sheen's situation to Conan O'Brien's battle with NBC in 2010, pointing out that O'Brien's "great talent is undiminished by his difficult experiences."

 

"Sober up, Charlie," he says. "And get back on TV, if it's not too late. This is America. You want to really piss off Chuck and Warner Brothers and CBS? Beg for America's forgiveness. They will give it to you. And then go back. You are a great television star. And you've got the gig."
