Charlie Harper played by Charlie Sheen is a playboy bachelor who lives in a beach house in Malibu.  He lives alone in the house and loves it, sleeping with a different woman every night and sometimes more than one. He writes jingles which allows him to have am expensive lifestyle without doing much real work. This changes when his chiropractor brother Alan (Jon Cryer), who has been thrown out of his home by his wife Judith and Alan’s 10 year old son, Jake (Angus Jones) starts to stay at weekends. Judith (Marin Hinkle) wants a divorce after twelve years of marriage mainly because he is so rigid and controlling and a part of her thinks that she may be gay.  Evelyn (Holland Taylor) is the controlling, manipulative and cold mother to the boys, she thinks Charlie is a “bitter disappointment” and Alan should have gone to medical school and become a real doctor.  Rose (Melanie Lynskey) is a woman that Charlie slept with for one night and now has become his stalker, her obsession with him won’t allow her to leave him alone.  Charlie quickly learns that he loves his nephew despite not being a “kid” person, and does the best he can for Jake and Alan, but keeps reminding them that they are only guests.
